Leadership Depth - This is the journey of inner transformation from Fear Consciousness (Gear 0) to Love Consciousness (Gear 5)
2. Craft Mastery - This is the journey to learn and grow to make a much bigger difference to our customers and our people.
3. Business Excellence - This is the journey to make a massive difference through our work. Our business becomes the playground for our good to great journey.

In today's article, we will spend time learning the craft of coaching to make a bigger difference to our people. The exact same principles can be used for our coachees and our kids.

In the work context, our role as a leader is to coach our people to become A-players and that requires investment of our time. The Meeting Cadence as defined by Verne Harnish and Shannon Susko gives us the opportunity to continuously coach our people. I like Shannon's addition to Verne's Meeting Cadence of 30 minutes weekly one-on-one with each one of our Direct Supportees. I love the phrase coined by Verne for our team members, instead of Direct Reportees. They are our Direct Supportees because we are meant to support them to play their game at A level, and they are meant to support us to play our A level game.

To ensure you have the right people in your team, it is important to create your Organization Function Chart or the FACe tool. In order to coach your people effectively, it is important to create a strategic picture called - Key Function Flow Map. This will help you identify the metrics for each function in your team, which will in turn support you to create a Function Scorecard. The Function Scorecard tells the function owner how to win the game through giving them clarity on - Purpose of the Function, Accountabilities, Competencies, Metrics, and the Core Values and Core Purpose of the organization.

The game has to be clearly defined and the scoreboard needs to be clearly articulated for them to know how to score runs to win. Without knowing how to win, you cannot coach your people to play at their A level.

Coaching can only begin from Gear 3 Consciousness. Here are key Gear 3 distinctions to remember for begin your journey as the Leader-as-a-Coach:
1. Relationship of Equals
2. Leading with Questions
3. Committed Listener - 90% Listening, 10% Talking
4. Spiritual Values - Humility, Vulnerable Authenticity, Raw Honesty, Courage
5. Childlike Trust and Faith in the Universe

I will share 2 frameworks to learn how to coach. The first framework is inspired from the book -The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More and Change the Way You Lead Forever by Michael Bungay Stanier

Use these questions to powerfully coach your people and touch, move and inspire them to learn, grow and contribute at A level.

The next framework is a growth tool inspired from Rich Litvin's work. Rich is a master coach. He has beautifully put together a comprehensive Deep-Coaching checklist which has been used to create the RYD Growth Tool for increasing our coaching effectiveness as a leader, as a coach and as a parent.

I am grateful to have been coached by him for nearly a year in 2017. I still look up to him and continually learn from what he puts out in the world in the form of his writings to forward my own journey as a coach, even as I have moved to another coach to deepen my experience of living and giving.

Download the RYD Deep Coaching Scorecard tool to self-assess yourself on coaching effectiveness and create a growth plan to become a better coach, quarter on quarter.

RYD_Deep Coaching Scorecard_v13May26.xlsx

File Size:

21 kb

File Type:

xlsx

Download File

You would be most served in learning how to coach and in continuously increasing your coaching effectiveness by working with your own coach. What is Craft Mastery?

The journey of playing to be the World's best, a Master of our Craft, in service of our customers' said and unsaid needs by becoming a Thought Leader and being at the source of Transformation of our industry globally. Craft Mastery not for the sake of ambition, but as an outcome of being purpose-inspired and Being-of-Service consciousness. Reading and learning not for intellectual stimulation or entertainment, but for the purpose of contributing to the communities that we are committed to serve through our Business. Craft Mastery enables the delivery of the Value Proposition at the level our customers have no right to expect and has them queue outside our door to buy from us, instead of us chasing them to buy from us.

The journey to being a Master of your Craft has five stages:
Stage 1 - Amateur: This is the stage of Passive Learning about your craft, when you learn on your own through reading works of masters in the field, training yourself through material available in the public domain.

Stage 2 - Professional: This is the stage of Active Learning, when you implement whatever you are learning to make a difference to your chosen target community.

Stage 3 - Expert: You become an Expert by learning through Apprenticeship, when you learn directly from an existing Master of your Craft.

Stage 4 - Mentor: You become a mentor when you teach others to become Experts in your domain.

Stage 5 - Master: You finally become a Master when you teach others to teach others to become Experts in your domain. This is when you go inside your craft and become it.

Your craft and domain is determined by the needs of your customer community. You want to grow in your craft, which includes learning whatever would massively serve your customer community, growing all the way to Master level to be an inventor, an innovator and a global Thought Leader in your domain, your industry.

When your learning is on the altar of Being of Service to your customer community, you may end-up breaking the boundaries of your industry to discover a new industry and blue oceans hidden away from other businesses because they are chasing revenue and profitability.

Here are the questions to ask yourself to define your Craft Mastery plan for the year:

1. What are the global trends that I can learn more about to make a bigger difference to our customers?

2. What can I learn that will support me to make a much bigger difference to our customers?

3. What is the job that our products / services are doing for our customers?

4. What can I learn to deliver that job to make a much bigger difference to our customers?

5. What can I learn that will support me to be of greater service to our customers?

Here are the answers I got when I reflected on the above questions:

1. What are the global trends that I need to learn more about to make a bigger difference to our coachees?
Artificial Intelligence is likely to change the way businesses function. Our Big Hairy Audacious Goal is to nurture great businesses from our land. Therefore, a deeper understanding of Why, What and How of AI would support us to make a much bigger difference to our coachees.

Apart from that, we would be building the next version of our RYD Playbook – the RYD Tech Platform – in the coming year. Understanding how AI can help us make the RYD tech platform of greater value to our coachees and coaches will support me to make a much bigger difference to our community.

So, I have registered for a 5-day in-person program in Nov 2025 with MIT Sloan, Cambridge, US – Leading an AI-Driven Organization.

I had attended an interesting session by Professor Vijay Govindarajan on Fusion Strategy at the CEO Summit in Harvard University last year. I will add his book to my reading list for this year - Fusion Strategy: How Real-Time Data and AI Will Power the Industrial Future.

2. What can I learn that will support me to make a much bigger difference to our coachees?
Our work is to dissolve our coachees’ fears not only from their conscious mind, but also from their sub-conscious and unconscious minds to support them to realize their highest potential to make a massive positive impact through their businesses.

Somatic (relating to the body) work helps in dissolving fears in the sub-conscious mind. Step-up my learning in Psychodrama which is a somatic modality. Therefore, I have signed-up for an in-person 5-day director’s intensive program with Dr Scott Giacomucci in Pennsylvania. Dr Scott is a leading global thought leader and impact creator in Psychodrama. Training with him will elevate my ability to make a much bigger difference to both our coachees and our coaches.

A deeper understanding of the therapeutic model will help in making a much bigger difference to our coachees and coaches to clear the past for them to create a new future in alignment with their reality-defying intentions and impossible, unimaginable, crazy-big dreams.

Therefore, I am considering doing a masters program in Expressive Arts Therapy, learnings from which I can weave into the RYD program design. Expressive Arts Therapy utilizes various art forms like visual arts, music, dance, drama, and writing to facilitate emotional expression, personal growth, and healing.

I have identified 2 low-residency programs – one in Europe and one in the US – with most of the sessions are online with few weeks per year in-person at the University. I am in conversation with a foreign education consultant to make a decision on this.

3. What is the job that our products / services are doing for our coachees?
The job that our product is doing for our coachees is to support them to lead themselves and their business from good to great, realize their dreams and have it all with ease and grace; while having lots of fun and adventure along the way.

4. What can I learn to deliver that job to make a much bigger difference to our coachees?

Attend Verne Harnish’s 3-day CEO Bootcamp in May 2025 being held in Noida to re-learn the fundamentals because creating something great is about mastering the fundamentals again and again and again.

In the 2-day in-person Verne’s masterclass that we are hosting in Aug 2025 for the RYD Community, sit with the humility of a student to learn the fundamentals all over again.

Also, integrate Shannon Byrne’s work with RYD Business Excellence journey to make a much bigger difference to our coachees, supporting them to lead their business from good to great with greater ease, grace and velocity.

Create RYD Business Excellence tools based on all the learning and integration of learnings.

Engage with global thought leaders in business for RYD EXPAND Events to elevate our community’s thinking and their ability to nurture great businesses.

5. What can I learn that will support me to be of greater service to our coachees?
Read HBR articles and relevant books with transformational ideas and create implementable summaries to contribute to our coachees and coaches.

The reflection on the 5 questions has given me a clear Craft Mastery plan for 2025.

What is your Craft Mastery plan for the current year based on your reflection on the above questions?

Keep learning, implementing and making a massive difference living your Purpose through your work to joyously lead yourself and your businesses from good to great, realize your dreams and have it all with ease and grace; while having lots of fun and adventure along the way 💜

Loving you,
j.
