1. The Awaken Journey - Awakening People to their Good to Great Journey
1.1 Connect and Gift

Make a conscious choice to step-up to Gear 5 Consciousness. Click this link for a process to Raise your Consciousness all the way to Gear 5.

Connect for the joy of connecting to another human being. There is no agenda except to deeply listen to the one person in front of you. Through this conversation, understand what would most make a difference to them.

Every good to great journey begins with a single conversation. When someone reaches out to us, they are not a lead, a prospect or a client. They are a Seeker — a soul reaching for something more, whether or not they have the words for it yet. Our very first gift to them is not information about our work. It is the experience of being deeply heard. That is the Connect Conversation.

At RYD, we do not sell coaching. We invite people to discover for themselves whether we are their structure of success for their good to great journey. The Awaken to Your Greatness Journey is a two-week experience of our work — our way of doing Seva, which is a Gear 2 transformative practise. Its intention is not to have the Seeker say yes to a longer journey with us. Its intention is for them to taste the mango. Just as no description of a mango to someone who has never tasted one will ever have them understand its taste, our coaching can only be experienced — never described. We gift the experience so that the Seeker can arrive at their own inner knowing: this is home for me; I have found my tribe.

So come to every Connect Conversation empty of agenda. Before you connect, make a conscious choice to raise your Consciousness to Gear 5 - https://www.jyotigulati.com/ryd-leadership-depth/raising-our-consciousness-all-the-way-to-gear-5

Connect for the sheer joy of connecting with another human being. Be their Committed Listener. Lead with questions — the intention of the conversation is to understand, not to be understood.

Remember that we are not seeking followers. We are nurturing leaders. As a coach, you will only ever offer a hypothesis — never claim it as the truth. Hold the Seeker as a scientist: invite them to question everything, to understand intellectually, and then, with their heart believing, to run their own experiments and arrive at their own truth. It is their truth that will lead them forward — not yours, not anybody else's. And even in this very first conversation, relate to them as your equal. The real guru is inside of them. Your only job, as their coach, is to connect them to their own guru, their own Inner Wisdom within.

This is the spirit in which we Connect and Gift – Awaken to Your Greatness journey, and Coach to Contribute to our coachees on the RYD Good to Great journey with us.

The Connect and Gift Conversation — A Script

The words below are Jyoti's own, offered as a gift to you. Make them your own. The conversation moves through five movements: Open and Connect, Understand, the RYD Story, the Gift, and the Integration Conversation.

Preparing to Connect
Before the conversation, make a conscious choice to raise your Consciousness to Gear 5 (https://www.jyotigulati.com/ryd-leadership-depth/raising-our-consciousness-all-the-way-to-gear-5) and step into your Whole Soul and Big Mind. Come from Love (your Whole Soul and Big Mind), not Fear (Hole in the Soul and small mind). Hold no agenda except to deeply serve the one person in front of you. Keep the range-of-emotions picture ready to share in the Integration Conversation at the close.

Movement 1 — Open & Connect
Coach:  How are you feeling?
Listen. If there has been any broken word on our side — a delay, a rescheduling — restore it cleanly and simply before anything else.
If restoring a broken word:
Coach:  I want to acknowledge my broken word in not creating this conversation earlier. My commitment going forward is to respond within 24 hours and to create whatever is needed for you. (for example)

Movement 2 — Understand
Coach:  Tell me more about you. What is your purpose this lifetime? What is the big game you are playing in your life?
Now simply listen. This is the heart of Connect. Lead with questions and let them unfold — the intention is to understand, not to be understood. Pick from these as the conversation invites:
● What do you most love about your work?
● What is your impossible, unimaginable, crazy dream?  Tell me more…
● What is most challenging about your work?
● What do you enjoy the most?  What do you find boring?
● What is your biggest concern?  What is stressing you?
● What is fun for you?

As they share, listen for their dream and their purpose. When you hear it, receive it fully.

Coach:  Hearing your dream fills my heart with joy.
Reflect their dream back to them, and name the resonance you feel between their dream and our BHAG. This is the bridge into the RYD Story.

Movement 3 — The RYD Story
What follows is not a monologue. It is a conversation. Share each beat, then draw the Seeker in with a question and let them think alongside you. Resonance is created through their own discovery, not through your telling.

The BHAG
Coach:  Let me share what we are up to. We are Realize Your Dreams Gym for Business, Leadership and Life Mastery™. Our Big Hairy Audacious Goal 2047 is to nurture sixty Indian businesses to be Fortune Global 100, three hundred Indian businesses to be Fortune Global 500, and twelve hundred Indian businesses to be Forbes Global 2000 — in service of our country becoming the world's most developed, beautiful and greenest nation, with her citizens happiest, healthiest and the most prosperous.

Spiritual Depth
Coach:  A few years ago, at a CEO bootcamp in Spain, some European founders asked j a question: what is it about Indians that so many of the world's largest businesses are led by Indian CEOs? The answer that came to her, spontaneously, was — Spiritual Depth. And, that question travelled home with her.

The Question, and the Data
Coach:  Because here is what she could not reconcile. If Indians have so much spiritual depth, why have we not nurtured great businesses from our country?
Share the striking contrast: Two decades ago, the US had around 175, China around 10, and India around 5-6. Today the US has dropped to 141, China has surged to 122, and India has merely reached 9
Coach note: verify the current Fortune Global 500 country counts before your conversation so your figures are accurate and current.
Coach:  So let me ask you — if our largest global businesses are so often led by Indians, why do you think India has not nurtured more Fortune Global 100 and Fortune Global 500 businesses from within?
Let them answer. Draw out their own diagnosis. Honour what they see.

Good to Great
Coach:  In his book Good to Great by Jim Collins, he asks one magnificent question: What has an organisation cut over from good to great?
His team studied over a 1300 businesses in the US. They defined greatness through a thirty-year graph — fifteen years performing below the market, a good-to-great transition point, and then fifteen years sustainably performing above it. They found eleven businesses across different industries that made that transition, and matched each with a comparison business in the same industry that did not; giving them 22 businesses to study to which they added couple of more as a control group. The instruction to the team was clear: find a process, not a personality.

The Surprising First Chapter — Level 5 Leaders
Coach:  What they found was that the great businesses — in completely different industries, with leaders who had never met — had all followed the same process. But before that process was the first chapter with a finding they had not gone looking for but the data was so significant that they could not ignore that. Let me ask you — what do you think that first chapter was about?

Let them guess. Then:
Coach:  It was about the leader at the helm of the business at the point of transition. The leaders who took their businesses from good to great had a particular kind of character. Collins called them Level 5 leaders. He called the leaders of the comparison businesses Level 4, who shared similar characteristics

Coach:  Here are some differences between Level 4 and Level 5 Leaders –
i. When success came, the Level 5 leader looked out of the window and gave the credit to others. They said we have a great team, supportive customers, positive market conditions. If someone turned around and said, it was your strategy that turned us around. If they could not find someone to give credit, they gave it to luck and said – We just got lucky.

While, the Level 4 leader looked in the mirror and said, “I did it” when success came. They gave interviews, wrote books, had their faces on the cover pages of business magazines.

ii. When failure came, the Level 5 leader looked in the mirror, took responsibility, rolled up their sleeves and went about working on the problems.
While, the Level 4 leader looked out of the window when failure came and blamed their team, the market conditions, the customers, the government.

iii. The Level 5 leader was an unusual combination of deep humility and intense professional will for the purpose of the business; while the Level 4 leader was all about – I, Me, Myself.

iv. When a Level 5 leader left, the business flourished even more — because they had built for the future. When a Level 4 leader left, the business collapsed — because they had optimised for themselves.

The Missing Parallel Process — Leadership Depth
Coach:  Collins says in the first chapter that Level 4 and Level 5 leaders are so opposite to each other that he doesn’t know how a leader becomes Level 5. He writes further that – Maybe, if you implement the Business Excellence process that they discovered, you may become a Level 5 Leader. If that was the case, the Mckinseys of the world would have implemented the Business Excellence process and created great businesses and great leaders, but that is not what we see in the world. Less than 10% of businesses and 10% of leaders around the world can be claimed to be great.

Great businesses and great leaders have still not been created at scale. Which tells us that business excellence process alone is not enough. There is a parallel process that has been missing. We call it Leadership Depth. A great business-excellence process can help nurture a great business — but we need great leaders to implement that process. It becomes evident that we first have to nurture Level 5 Leaders, who have the courage and inner strength to implement the business-excellence process to nurture a great business.

Fear to Love
Coach:  The probable reason Jim Collins could not find a path of growth from Level 4 leaders to Leavel 5 leaders is because they are not in the same Universe. They operate in different models of leadership, in different worlds altogether. The old model of leadership is sourced in Fear. Do you remember what Charles Darwin called his theory of evolution?

Let them respond. Then:

You are right / If I tell you, you will remember it.
He called it - Survival of the Fittest. Imagine, millions of years ago, two of our ancestirs are having a joyous conversation without realising they are outside a lion’s den. Suddenly the lion roars. One of our ancestors experiences a chemical reaction called Fear in response to that, which activates his muscles and without thinking, he runs and climbs a tree. Our other ancestor is standing there, wondering what happened. Out ambles the lion and eats him. Who survived?

Let them respond. Then:

You are right. Our ancestor who experienced fear in their body and ran in respond to that. You and I are the children of that ancestor. We are the children of Fear, continuously scanning the environment for what can go wrong and protecting ourselves. That is why we are not Dinosaurs talking to each other. We are human beings talking to each other because we survived. Our source of survival, even till today, is Fear. Our default consciousness is Fear Consciousness.

What got us here cannot lead us forward. Therefore, if we keep operating from Fear, it will eventually make us extinct. We, as a species, have to evolve beyond – Survival of the Fittest. We believe the next leg of our species’ evolutionary journey is – Thrival of the Strongest – strongest of the heart, strongest of the mind, strongest of the soul. And, the source of that evolution is Love.

The old model of leadership is sourced in Fear; where dog eat cat, you win – I lose, I win – you lose, each one of themselves, forever working hard to survive.

The new model of leadership is sourced in Love; where we operate from the consciousness of contribution, purpose, abundance, connection, loving kindness to thrive in a Brave New World of love, peace and joy.
In our work, when a High Performing leader joins us to go on their good to great journey with RYD as their structure of success, they are usually high achieving Level 4 leaders – having created success at the cost of other areas of their wheel of life. From the old model of leadership at Level 4, we bring them to the new model of leadership at Gear 0. And, through growth habits and transformative practises, we coach them to raise their consciousness from Gear 0 to Gear 1, Gear 2, Gear 3, Gear 4, all the way to Gear 5 to become a Level 5 leader, in Jim Collins language.

Back to the Question
Why are we not able to nurture Fortune Global 100, Fortune Global 500 businesses from our land? What is your hypothesis?

Let them respond. Then:

That is a perfectly valid hypothesis. Here is our hypothesis –
We believe there are three reasons why we aren’t nurturing great businesses from our land:
1. Business Excellence: We do not understand the art, science and math of building a great business. We have to learn that.
2. Craft Mastery: Maybe because of years of colonisation, our creativity and innovation muscle is weak. There is an art, science and math to be the world’s best, to be a global thought leader. We will have to play the game to be the world’s best in our industry. Even our biggest companies – the Tatas, Ambanis – have grown through width of more businesses, not through depth of creating the world’s best in its category. We have to learn to be the master of our craft.
3. Leadership Depth: Leadership Depth is same as Spiritual Depth, which is the inner journey of personal transformation from our default Fear Consciousness to a higher evolutionary Love Consciousness. This is the journey from a Level 4 Leader (Gear 0 Leader in our language) to a Level 5 Leader (Gear 5 Leader in our language). Business excellence alone gives us good results, but not great results — unless Leadership Depth is developed alongside it for the leader to have the courage and inspiration to fully implement the Business Excellence process.

As per Freudian principle, 5% of our mind is the conscious mind, 15% of our mind is the sub-conscious mind, 80% of the mind is the unconscious mind. While the West have given us Coaching as a method to become aware of and dissolve our fears in the conscious mind, Therapy as a method to become aware of and dissolve our fears in the sub-conscious mind; India has gifted to the world methods like Yoga and Vipassana to become aware of and dissolve fears in the unconscious mind – which is 80% of the mind.
While we have the art, science and math of the 80% in India, we don’t use that ancient wisdom to develop our leaders. What we also need today is an integrated approach to address all 3 parts of the mind to develop a Whole Leader, a Gear 5 Leader, a Level 5 Leader sourced in Love Consciousness.
How does this land on you?

Let them respond. Then:

The RYD Community
Coach:  We run our own Centre for Coaching Excellence: to coach and develop our coaches on the art, science and math of the 3 growth levers – Business Excellence, Craft Mastery and Leadership Depth – to become the world’s best coaches. Have you heard of Bill Campbell, the Trillion Dollar Coach? His coachees were the founders of Google, Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Intuit, Bill Gates. His coaching helped create trillion dollars of impact in the USA. That is what we want for our country. Before we can nurture trillion-dollar businesses and nurture world’s best nation-building, world-transforming, massive-positive-impact-creating leaders, we have to nurture trillion-dollar coaches who are the world’s best.
Our purpose is to raise human consciousness from fear to love and we use Business as our playground to fulfil on our Purpose. Human evolution is a community process, not a solitary individual journey. That is why we operate in a community model. We are a community of 3 communities –
i. the heart of RYD: a community of business owners, CEOs and leaders committed to lead themselves and their businesses from good to great,
ii. the soul of RYD: a community of coaches who are given ongoing continuous training and coaching to serve our coachees, who are at the centre of our Universe
iii. the energy of RYD: a community of global thought leaders who are committed to support us to achieve our BHAG

Movement 4 — The Gift
When you feel the resonance, offer the gift of Awaken to Your Greatness journey as a Seva.
