What is Craft Mastery?

The journey of playing to be the World's best, a Master of our Craft, in service of our customers' said and unsaid needs by becoming a Thought Leader and being at the source of Transformation of our industry globally. Craft Mastery not for the sake of ambition, but as an outcome of being purpose-inspired and Being-of-Service consciousness. Reading and learning not for intellectual stimulation or entertainment, but for the purpose of contributing to the communities that we are committed to serve through our Business. Craft Mastery enables the delivery of the Value Proposition at the level our customers have no right to expect and has them queue outside our door to buy from us, instead of us chasing them to buy from us.

Craft Mastery is our 2nd Growth Lever on our good to great journey; with Leadership Depth and Business Excellence being the other 2 growth levers.

The journey to being a Master of our Craft has five stages:

Stage 1. Passive Learning: In this stage, we read to expand our thinking. We work on increasing our focus and attention to get to 24 books a year. It is not more time we need to read so many books. What we need is laser sharp focus, concentration and stillness of mind to read more pages per hour.

24 is the number of books Topgrading author, Brad Smart, found separated A-player executives from B and C players. Topgrading is a rigorous hiring and talent management methodology that helps organisations identify, hire and develop A players.

Stage 2. Active Learning: We learn actively by implementing ideas, from the books we are reading, with the commitment to contribute at home, at work and in the world. Implementing deepens our learning and accelerates our growth.

Stage 3. Immersive Learning: In this stage, we learn through Apprenticeship, when we learn directly from an existing Master of our Craft.

Stage 4. Transformative Learning: We become a mentor as we coach others to become Experts in our domain. This is when we start writing articles. We transform as we transform others.

Stage 5. Generative Learning: We become a Master when we coach Experts to become Mentors in our domain. This is when we go inside our craft and become it. This is when we start writing books to learn, grow and contribute by generating knowledge itself and being the source of our domain.

Here's how you colour code the components to visually map your journey:

1. Green – The contribution component is fully implemented with integrity
2. Orange – The contribution component has been implemented with 50% or more consistency but less than 100%. Value is being delivered.
3. Yellow – The contribution component has been implemented but the consistency less than 50%
4. White – The implementation of the contribution component hasn’t started as yet
