The RYD Journey
1. Being the Greatest Version of Who We are meant to Be
Good is the enemy of Great. And, that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. ... Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life. The vast majority of companies never become great, precisely because the vast majority become quite good - and that is their main problem.
- from Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't by Jim Collins
Ever wondered
i. why inspite of a framework readily available to lead a business from good to great, yet most businesses remain good?
ii. why inspite of a framework readily available for building a profitable business model, most start-ups die much before becoming profitable?
iii. why inspite of a framework readily available for scaling up, yet most start-ups that become profitable never massively scale-up?
Jim Collins study gives us a clue. He and his research team started with studying 1,435 good companies and examined their performance over 40 years that helped them identify 11 companies that became great. He and his team did a deep-dive study of these 11 companies to arrive at a framework to help businesses cut-over to greatness; the results of which he published in his book after 5-year research effort - Good to Great.
Yet, before sharing the framework in his book, he calls out that all businesses that cut over to greatness had a special kind of leader at the helm of the organisation. He called them Level 5. And, he wrote, he doesn't know how you become a Level 5 leader (characterized by deep humility and intense professional will) because they are opposite of Level 4.
And, that is where the secret is. We call Level 5 as Gear 5 Leaders in RYD. The reason Collins could not find a straight-line path between Level 4 and Level 5 is because they do not exist in the same Universe.
In the old model of Leadership sourced in Fear and Scarcity, you can only rise up to Level 4. It's only in the new model of Leadership sourced in Love and Abundance, we can raise our human consciousness from Gear 0 (that's where Level 4 Leaders are) all the way up to Gear 5. Gear 5 leader is what Collins calls Level 5 leader.
Salim Ismail's book - Exponential Organizations - mentions an insight that Google had based on their study of the productivity and performance of their employees that employees who had experienced personal trauma were far more high-performing than employees who came from ivy-league colleges.
Google recently demonstrated that its best employees were not Ivy League students but rather young people who had experienced a big loss in their lives and had been able to transform that experience into growth. According to Google, deep personal loss has resulted in employees who are more humble and open to listening and learning.
- Exponential Organizations by Salim Ismail
We have seen how people step-up as human beings in face of traumatic situations in their lives. People who cut-over to greatness all have had to face severely challenging situations.
What's happening here is that human consciousness gets raised in response to trauma. And, leadership development is about raising human consciousness.
There are two ways to raise human consciousness - either through pain or through Insights. Why wait for the Universe to give us a kick in the butt for us to grow as human beings? We are born for greatness and if we don't consciously choose the path of greatness, we will keep getting a kick in the butt by the Universe. We can distract ourselves from that pain by getting addicted to hard-work, working out, going out on holidays, eating, drinking, smoking, taking in other kinds of intoxicants etc., though the commonest way to distract ourselves from the pain is to drown ourselves in work.
The Leadership Depth framework of RYD from Gear 0 to Gear 5 is a structured approach to grow our human consciousness through the path of Insights (through weekly coaching), Daily Habits and games we play (RYD EXPAND Events, RYD IPL Championships, RYD Wisdom Projects, RYD Buddy Calls).
That means, roll-up your sleeves to do your daily RYD Habits with a smile on your face till the mind catches up with that smile. Attend every session where ever you are in the world and play every game full-out.
Yet, Leadership Depth to grow requires a play ground. Sachin Tendulkar could not have become great without the playground of cricket. For us, our playground is Business. Neither could Sachin have become great without excelling in the technique of cricket. For us, the technique we need to excel in is through Craft Mastery.
It's the threesome together - Leadership Depth, Business Excellence and Craft Mastery - that gets us to the summit of our Mount Everest, personally and professionally.
Each one of us has a seed of genius. It is our responsibility and our Purpose every Lifetime to water it, nurture it, nourish it so that it fully blossoms to make a massive difference to the communities that we are a part of.
Keep playing the Great Game of Business to joyously lead yourself and your business from good to great, realize your dreams and have it all with ease and grace; while having lots of fun along the way 💜
Loving you,
j.

2. Leading our Business from Good to Great
The journey of transforming your organization from good to great begins with you transforming from good to great. Fortunately or unfortunately, the organization mirrors the leader at the helm of the organization. Fortunately because that means the power is in your hands to make this happen. Unfortunately because it is easier to work on the outside than on the inside.
For the organization to shift gears from good to great, there are actually 3 journeys that the CEO will have to undertake simultaneously:
1. Leadership Depth
2. Craft Mastery
3. Business Excellence
Even before we begin to explore each in greater detail, let us define what is good and what is great to assess whether it is even worthwhile to be on this journey. A good organization makes profit but struggles to do so, is in the red ocean of bloody waters with competition nibbling at its toes, primary motive is financial survival, does not have any significant impact in the world, employees work half-heartedly and only for their salary. Employee engagement is a huge focus because disengagement is so rampant. Employees don't feel connected with their own selves or with each other or with their leaders. Its stressful to be working and everyone is waiting to hang-up their corporate boots some day to follow their heart, to come alive. There are offsites to discuss mission, strategy, future etc. and everyone uses these as a way to get a breather from the boring routine and nobody remembers anything once they are back at work. Nobody understands what love is or what's that got to do with work. Leadership is bottom-line and top-line focussed. Another word for good is mediocrity and the organization is only leading itself to a certain death sometime in the future.
A great organization is purpose-inspired; significantly and positively impacts human consciousness and evolution; passion, commitment, accountability, self-inspiration and purpose light up the employees who joyously work with their heart, mind and soul; is in the blue ocean, is a market leader running a monopoly with its nearest competitor miles away; is in an effortless self-sustaining cycle of creativity, innovation and profitability. No employee engagement programs are needed because employees are deeply engaged and connected with their work, with each other and with their leaders. Employees live their purpose of life through their work; leave the day at work feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. There's focus on value-based leadership with leaders creating a space of compassionate love through nurturing, coaching and leading authentically by themselves doing 10 times what they tell their people to do. This results in breakthrough performance, productivity and profitability.
Well, isn't leading your organization from good to great then a worthy goal?
If it is, then let's deep dive into what it takes to make that happen.
Wishing you the joy of the journey 💜
Loving you,

4. What is Leadership Depth?
Leadership Depth is the inner journey of personal transformation from our default Fear Consciousness to Love Consciousness, from our default Scarcity Consciousness to Abundance Consciousness, from our default Surviving Consciousness to Thriving Consciousness, from being a Fighter or a Victim or a Rescuer to a Peaceful Warrior, embracing and dissolving our default fears to become Whole and Complete by stepping into Pure Consciousness and Transcendent Love for greater impact in the world by living our Purpose of Life through our work.
The measure of Leadership Depth is to Have It All:
i. Deeply fulfilling, successful, profitable business supporting us to live our purpose of life; gifting us with impact, contribution and financial freedom
ii. Loving, harmonious, positive, uplifting relationships at work and at home
iii. Happy, healthy, responsible kids with their genius joyfully expressed
iv. Nourishing, nurturing ourselves to the highest level of health, fitness and joyous well-being - physical, emotional, mental, spiritual
v. Making a massive difference through the work we do
RYD Distinctions (a distinct point on the ball of perspective that gives us access to our Power to Create) enable us to strengthen our Leadership Depth. RYD Habits help us to transform the intellectual understanding of the Distinctions into Experiential Understanding which is when our Inner Wisdom awakens.
Leadership Depth journey is from Gear 1 to Gear 5. At Gear 5, our Power to Create fully blossoms and we become a Master Creator.
You cannot lead your organization from good to great without deepening who you are as a human being, without being on your own journey of transformation and evolution from good to great. This is a journey over 5 Gears by dropping Limiting Habits and inculcating Growth Habits to create the highest level of health, fitness and joyous well-being across all the 4 bodies (Physical, Emotional, Intellectual / Mental, Spiritual) of your Being.
Each Gear is about elevating one’s consciousness by developing a specific leadership muscle, working at the level of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual habits.
What does Consciousness mean? Consciousness’ refers to one's awareness of one's unique thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations and environment. In other words, consciousness is the quality or state of being aware of one's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Elevating our human consciousness means elevating our awareness of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies through Growth Habits (RYD Leadership Depth Habits in our language) to create the highest level of health, fitness and joyous well-being.
Gear 1: Discovering your destiny, your purpose this life-time. Strengthening Agility of Mind™ leadership muscle to experience unconditional love, gratitude and reverence for who you are as a human being. There is deep stillness within, with nowhere to go and nothing to prove.
Gear 2: Making a difference through your work, playing your big game with peace in your heart and mind. Strengthening Being of Service™ leadership muscle to see the light in everyone and have the leadership depth to give your unconditional love, gratitude and reverence to each one in your space, irrespective of however they are and however they are not. Experiencing oneness with the Universe.
Gear 3: Experiencing joy of effortless existence as the world around you experiences you as extraordinary. You receive unconditional love, gratitude and reverence from everyone as you strengthen your Communicating in the World of Others™ leadership muscle.
Gear 4: Experiencing deep fulfilment as others in your space experience themselves as extraordinary and experience unconditional love, gratitude and reverence for themselves. The Authentic Leader in you is born as you get access to significant Power to Create™ by strengthening your Delivery on Your Word™ leadership muscle.
Gear 5: People in your space experience each other as extraordinary and give their unconditional love, gratitude and reverence to each other. Your presence causes a shift in the space around you as you inspire a culture of trust, partnership and compassionate love; with each one supporting the other to be successful. The Master in you is born, as you strengthen your Excellence™ leadership muscle to have your Power to Create™ in full bloom. You become The Master Creator. You intend; it gets created effortlessly and almost instantaneously.
Yes, it is a long haul forward. Why should you make your life difficult to be on this path? Because this path supports you to have it all -
i. Deeply fulfilling, successful, profitable business supporting you to live your purpose of life; gifting you with impact, contribution and financial freedom
ii. Loving, harmonious, positive, uplifting relationships at work and at home
iii. Happy, healthy, responsible kids with their genius joyfully expressed
iv. Nourishing, nurturing yourself to the highest level of health, fitness and joyous well-being - physical, emotional, mental, spiritual
v. Making a massive difference through the work you do
The old model of leadership only gives you a successful career but at the cost of everything else. In this new model of leadership, you have it all. Then, why not?
"Every time you don't follow your inner guidance, you feel a loss of energy, loss of power, a sense of spiritual deadness."
- Shakti Gawain
Our work on the RYD Leadership Depth Journey is to awaken our inner guidance, our Inner Wisdom. In Gear 0, the noisy voice of our small mind and our Hole in the Soul is so loud that we can't hear the gentle, soothing, centering, grounding, loving, nurturing, nourishing voice of our Inner Wisdom, our Big Mind, our Whole Soul.
Doing our daily RYD Leadership Depth Habits with integrity, commitment, passion and enthusiasm strengthen our Big Mind and to reduce the power of our small mind so that the noisy decibel level of its voice comes down for us to hear the soft whispers of our Big Mind.
The RYD Leadership Depth Journey is over 3 tracks - starter, champion and mastery. We tend to give up on our habits because we experience failure on a daily basis as it is super difficult to be consistent. That is why most people give up on growth habits.
But, that is the design of the journey. We progress not because we never fall off. We progress because we come back every time we fall off. In the starter track from Gear 0 to Gear 5, we fall off 60% of the times. It's in coming back and coming back and coming back each time we fall that we step up to the Champion Track. Yet, on the champion track we fall off 20% of the time and the fall is steeper. It's in coming back and coming back and coming back that we step up to the Mastery track which is when we are on the path 100% of the time.
When we have mastered something, then we raise the bar and take on something new to master. It's an ongoing journey with no destination. Climb to one summit and from that summit, you will see other mountains to climb and other summits to conquer. The journey itself is the destination. The joy is in being on the good to great journey. Success is being on the good to great journey. Failure is to choose to play the good game and deny ourselves the joyous fulfilment of playing the Good to Great game.
Have a relaxing, fun and a joyously fulfilling day ahead 💜

5. What is Craft Mastery?
The journey of playing to be the World's best, a Master of our Craft, in service of our customers' said and unsaid needs by becoming a Thought Leader and being at the source of Transformation of our industry globally.
Craft Mastery not for the sake of ambition, but as an outcome of being purpose-inspired to contribute and make a difference.
Reading and learning not for intellectual stimulation or entertainment, but for the purpose of contributing to the communities that we are committed to serve.
Craft Mastery enables the delivery of the Value Proposition at the level that our customers have no right to expect and has them queue outside our door to buy from us, instead of us having to chase them to sell.
Craft Mastery at its highest is a state of Consciousness in Gear 5 where the game is Excellence not for external applause or external validation but for the God within us, inside of our commitment to make a massive difference to our employee and customer communities.
Craft Mastery is to play the game to be so good in our work that Gods themselves bow down to us in reverence. If we try to skip the earlier gears (Gear 1 - Love for Self, Gear 2 - Gratitude for all in our Space, Gear 3 - Reverence for all of Life, Gear 4 - Integrity) and jump straight to Gear 5 from Gear 0, then we are saddled with arrogance which drags us down to the very Hole in the Soul we set out to avoid.
At Stage 5 of Craft Mastery, we become Master Contributors.
For the organization to cut-over to greatness, there is no other option but to be the world's best in whatever the organization is upto. And, for that to happen, the employees need to be playing the game to be the world's best in whatever they are doing as part of the organized work. For the employees to be on the learning path to be masters of their domain, their craft; you absolutely guessed it - the CEO has to be playing the game to be the master of the domain the organization is in. This is also a journey over five stages.
1. Amateur: This is the stage of Passive Learning, when you learn on your own through reading works of masters in the field, training yourself through material available in the public domain.
2. Professional: This is the stage of Active Learning, when you implement whatever you are learning to make a difference to your chosen target community.
3. Expert: You become an Expert by learning through Apprenticeship, when you learn directly from an existing Master of your Craft.
4. Mentor: You become a mentor when you coach others to become Experts in your domain.
5. Master: You finally become a Master when you coach Experts to become Mentors in your domain. This is when you go inside your craft and become it.
Wishing you the joyous fulfilment of Craft Mastery 💜
Loving you,
j.

Loving you,
j.
6. What is Business Excellence?
The outer journey of professional success by living our purpose through our work, leading our business from good to great, generating a healthy Triple Bottom Line (3P - Profit, People, Planet); creating a legacy by making a massive difference to our employees, customer communities, business partners, investors and all other stakeholders.
i. Nurturing Customer Relationships: Coaching our team to work from Being of Service consciousness, creating a powerful Value Proposition for our customers that makes a massive difference, by marrying what’s missing in the world for them with Craft Mastery. Frameworks to leverage: Blue Ocean, Verne Harnish’s Scaling-up’s 7-Strata, Alex Osterwalder's Business Model Canvas
ii. Operational Excellence: Creative ways to reduce our and our team’s time, effort and resources and yet increasing value for our customer communities creating a powerful Profit Proposition. Frameworks to leverage: 1FOR5 (1 Action to fulfil 5 Intentions), DLCM (Do Less to Create More Value), Verne Harnish's Scaling-up Methodology
iii. Extraordinary Service: Serving and contributing to our customers, employees, business partners, investors and all other stakeholders to the level they have no right to expect; sourced in a powerful People Proposition created through Leadership Depth.
Because our words create our world, here’s what is the RYD definition of common business terms inside of our commitment to transform what it means to be a business, what it means to be a leader and inside of that what it means to be a human being:
i. Business - Channel of Impact
ii. CEO - Chief Engagement Officer who engage the hearts and souls of their people; inspiring them to joyously deliver on the Purpose of the Business to make a massive difference to their customer communities and the world.
iii. Marketing - Communicating to our customer communities who we are as a Business by Making a Difference to them in ways that contribute to them
iv. Sales is ‘our Impact in the world’
v. Profit is the difference we are making to our people, our staff, our employees.
vi. Operations is ‘Do Less to Create more Value’
vii. Innovation is ‘Make a Difference to Customers’
viii. IT is ‘Ease of Making a Difference’
ix. HR is ‘Happy Healthy Prosperous Employees’
x. Corporate Social Responsibility is ‘Nation Building’
xi. Organization: Organised way to make a massive difference to communities that the business is inspired to serve
Business Excellence is a journey over 5 mountains. At Mountain 5, we become Master Servant Leaders.
Mountain 1: Inquiring into his / her own Purpose, the CEO identifies a real experiential link between his / her purpose of life and what the organization is up to in the world. Without this, there will be mediocrity and death which is the only outcome available to a good organization. For the organization to be on the path of greatness; the CEO has to be on the path of greatness working with a mission to transform the world, committed to make a huge difference, driven to leave footprints in the sand of time.
Mountain 2: Discovering your organization's Blue Ocean and a Compelling Value Proposition that has prospects chase you to become your customers instead of your business having to chase the customers. Till the time you don't have anything to offer that has customers chase you, you are playing a losing game.
Mountain 3: Iterating to create a robust Repeatable, Scalable and Profitable Business Model, giving your business a solid foundation of long-term value-creation for your customers and for your organization. Here's how you test whether you are ready to cross this mountain -
a. Profitability - Is the cost of customer creation and product / service development & delivery substantially less than what she is willing to pay for?
b. Repeatability - Can you repeat the entire value creation cycle (from customer creation to post-sales service) following the same steps, with the same inputs and the same outputs, every time; delighting the customer the same extraordinary way each time?
c. Scalability - Can the entire process run without you?
Mountain 4: Scaling-up your business through Nurturing Customer Relationships, Operational Excellence and Extraordinary Service.
a. Nurturing Customer Relationships: Your sales team is more committed to the well-being of the community that your organization serves (your customers) than to the commission that they will earn.
b. Operational Excellence: Bottoms-up continuous process automation and innovation to reduce costs, reduce time to do any specific activity and increase quality.
c. Extraordinary Service: Delighting customers with such amazing service, at levels that the customers have no right to expect.
Mountain 5: Creating a Self-Sustaining Business. The fifth stage is when the organization no longer needs you and can function effectively without you, as you have not only created an organization with strong, robust fundamentals but also have created succeeding leaders to take the organization to its next level of evolution with even greater velocity. You are now free to contribute to the entire industry, leading the industry itself to transform through your thought leadership, impacting a lot more organizations simultaneously as you sit on multiple Boards of Directors and bring about social change, contributing to the evolution of the human race bringing people and countries together through who you have become as a human being as an outcome of leading your organization from good to great.
Keep creating to joyously lead yourself and your business from good to great, realize your dreams and have it all with ease and grace; while having lots of fun along the way 💜

7. The 3 Journeys are Parallel
The most efficient way to travel on the good to great path is to synchronize each of the five stages of Leadership Depth, Craft Mastery and Business Excellence, because the three journeys are inter-linked. One journey is not possible without the other two. If you progress on one journey, your growth will stop till you don't progress on the other two journeys.
Gear 1 Leader - Leadership Muscle: Agility of Mind, State of Consciousness: Love for Self
Stage 1 of Craft Mastery - Passive Learning: Studying the works of masters of our craft for our understanding
Mountain 1 of Business Excellence - Mountain of Purpose
Gear 2 Leader - Leadership Muscle: Being of Service, State of Consciousness: Gratitude
Stage 2 of Craft Mastery - Active Learning: Implementing our learnings for the benefit of our employees and customers

Business Excellence and Craft Mastery journeys accelerate the Leadership Depth journey. Leadership Depth accelerates the Business Excellence and Craft Mastery journeys is equally true. Business Excellence accelerates the Leadership Depth and Craft Mastery journeys. Leadership Depth and Craft Mastery journeys accelerate the Business Excellence journey. Craft Mastery accelerates the Business Excellence and Leadership Depth journeys. Business Excellence and Leadership Depth journeys accelerates the Craft Mastery journey. These are all true statements because each one powers the other two Growth Levers. Therefore, it is important to travel all the three journeys together for us to travel with greater velocity.
Each step-up in the journey of a growth lever makes the step-up in the other two journeys possible. Journey on a particular growth lever will not give the highest level growth (Gear 5 / Stage 5 / Mountain 5) without the other two journeys in parallel. We have so many good companies dancing the death of mediocrity because this principle is not understood. It's harder this way but who said the journey to Greatness was for the faint-hearted.
Yet, deepest, joyous fulfilment is only available to those who choose to travel the journey to the summit of their Mount Everest to unlock their genius and live in the expression of their undeniable greatness, making a massive difference through their Business. Unleashing our highest potential by living our Purpose through our Business is a beautiful journey. May you all be blessed with it.
"Mastery is not a question of genetics or luck, but of following your natural inclinations and the deep desire that stirs you from within. Everyone has such inclinations. This desire within you is not motivated by egotism or sheer ambition for power, both of which are emotions that get in the way of mastery. It is instead a deep expression of something natural, something that marked you at birth as unique. In following your inclinations and moving towards mastery, you make a great contribution to society, enriching it with discoveries and insights... It is in fact the height of selfishness to merely consume what others create and to retreat into a shell of limited goals and immediate pleasures. Alienating yourself from your inclinations can only lead to pain and disappointment in the long run, and a sense that you have wasted something unique. This pain will be expressed in bitterness and envy, and you will not recognise the true source of your depression.
Your True Self does not speak in words or banal phrases. Its voice comes from deep within you, from the substrata of your psyche, from something embedded physically within you. It emanates from your uniqueness, and it communicates through sensations and powerful desires that seem to transcend you. You cannot ultimately understand why you are drawn to certain activities or forms of knowledge. This cannot really be verbalised or explained. It is simply a fact of nature. In following this voice, you realize your own potential and satisfy your deepest longings to create and express your uniqueness. It exists for a purpose; and it is your Life's Task to bring it to fruition.
